Job Overview

The Battery Storage Systems Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of large‑scale battery storage solutions for renewable energy projects across Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. Reporting to the Regional Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams including project development, grid integration, and operations to deliver high‑performance storage systems that meet regulatory standards and client expectations. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering design of lithium‑ion and flow battery storage systems, including sizing, layout, and thermal management.
  • Develop detailed technical specifications, schematics, and integration plans for battery systems interfacing with solar, wind, and grid infrastructure.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, cost‑benefit analyses, and performance modeling to optimize system efficiency and lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Perform system validation, testing, and commissioning, ensuring compliance with local regulations and international standards.
  • Provide technical support during operation and maintenance phases, troubleshooting issues and recommending upgrades.
  • Collaborate with research partners and universities in Ethiopia to explore emerging storage technologies.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for stakeholders, including government agencies and investors.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of battery chemistry, power electronics, and energy management systems.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSS®E, or HOMER.
  • Experience with grid integration studies and utility interconnection standards.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and analytical mindset.
  • Effective communication skills in English; proficiency in Amharic or local languages is a plus.
  • Project management experience with ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, IEC 61850) are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Minimum of five years of hands‑on experience designing, installing, or commissioning battery storage projects of at least 5 MW capacity. Prior experience in emerging markets, especially within Africa, is strongly preferred.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 180,000 to 250,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based incentives, health insurance, and retirement benefits.
