Job Overview

The Curriculum Development Specialist will lead the design, adaptation, and implementation of high-quality curricula for primary and secondary education programs funded by the World Bank in Ethiopia. The specialist will work closely with Ministry of Education officials, local curriculum experts, and international partners to ensure that learning materials are culturally relevant, pedagogically sound, and aligned with global standards. This position involves extensive research, stakeholder engagement, and the creation of innovative instructional resources that support inclusive and equitable education for all Ethiopian children.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive needs assessments to identify gaps in existing curricula across subjects such as mathematics, science, language arts, and civic education.
• Develop curriculum frameworks, learning objectives, and assessment tools that reflect Ethiopia’s national education standards and World Bank best practices.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts, teachers, and local education authorities to pilot and refine curriculum modules.
• Produce teacher guides, student textbooks, digital learning resources, and multimedia content that enhance classroom instruction.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented curricula through data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Provide technical assistance and capacity‑building workshops for curriculum developers and educators at regional and district levels.
• Ensure all curriculum materials are gender‑responsive, inclusive of children with disabilities, and supportive of multilingual instruction.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of global education trends, UNESCO guidelines, and emerging instructional technologies.

Required Skills

• Strong expertise in curriculum design, instructional design, and educational assessment.
• Excellent analytical and research skills with the ability to synthesize complex data into actionable recommendations.
• Proficiency in English and Amharic; knowledge of additional Ethiopian languages is an advantage.
• Experience using digital authoring tools, learning management systems, and open‑source educational platforms.
• Effective communication and facilitation skills for workshops and stakeholder meetings.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
• Demonstrated commitment to gender equity, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity.

Education

A Master’s degree in Education, Curriculum Studies, Instructional Design, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in curriculum development or international education are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five years of professional experience designing curricula for K‑12 education, preferably within an international development context or with a government education agency. Experience in Ethiopia or the Horn of Africa region is a strong plus.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from 250,000 to 350,000 SSP per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional allowances for housing, transportation, and professional development may be provided in accordance with World Bank policies.
