Job Overview

The Senior Water Resources Engineer will lead the technical design, implementation, and monitoring of water resources projects funded by the World Bank in Ethiopia. The role involves close collaboration with government ministries, local utilities, and international consultants to develop integrated water management solutions that are socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable. The engineer will be responsible for overseeing feasibility studies, hydraulic modeling, risk assessments, and the preparation of technical reports that meet World Bank standards. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and execution of water resources projects, including dams, reservoirs, irrigation schemes, and urban water supply systems.
• Conduct comprehensive hydraulic and hydrologic analyses using advanced modeling tools to assess project feasibility and performance.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, feasibility studies, and environmental impact assessments in compliance with World Bank policies.
• Coordinate with Ethiopian ministries, regional water bureaus, and local stakeholders to ensure alignment with national water strategies.
• Supervise multidisciplinary project teams, including engineers, hydrologists, and consultants, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
• Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track project outcomes and sustainability metrics.
• Provide technical guidance and capacity‑building workshops for local engineers and government officials.
• Manage project budgets, timelines, and procurement processes in accordance with World Bank financial guidelines.

Required Skills

• Advanced proficiency in water resources engineering software (e.g., HEC‑RAS, SWAT, MODFLOW).
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a focus on data‑driven decision making.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of Amharic is an advantage.
• Proven experience in managing large‑scale infrastructure projects in developing countries.
• Ability to work collaboratively across cultures and with diverse stakeholder groups.
• Familiarity with World Bank environmental and social safeguard policies.

Education

A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer) or PMP are considered a plus.

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in water resources engineering, with at least three (3) years in a senior or lead role on international development projects. Experience in Ethiopia or the Horn of Africa region is highly desirable.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 250,000 to SSP 350,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives may be provided.
