Job Overview
The Senior Wind Turbine Maintenance Engineer will lead the technical maintenance strategy for Vestas’ wind farms in the northern region of Ethiopia. This role involves overseeing preventive and corrective maintenance activities, ensuring optimal turbine performance, and driving reliability improvements across the asset portfolio. The engineer will collaborate with field technicians, project managers, and external vendors to implement best‑practice maintenance procedures, manage spare‑part inventories, and support the integration of advanced monitoring technologies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive maintenance plans for wind turbine fleets, including scheduled inspections, component replacements, and performance testing.
- Lead a team of field technicians, providing technical guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure high‑quality workmanship.
- Analyze turbine performance data using SCADA systems to identify trends, predict failures, and implement condition‑based maintenance strategies.
- Coordinate with procurement to manage spare‑part inventories, ensuring critical components are available to reduce mean time to repair (MTTR).
- Conduct root‑cause investigations for turbine failures, produce detailed reports, and recommend design or operational improvements.
- Ensure compliance with local and international safety regulations, conducting regular safety audits and risk assessments on site.
- Collaborate with engineering design teams to evaluate retrofit opportunities that enhance turbine efficiency and lifespan.
- Prepare and present monthly performance dashboards to senior management, highlighting key metrics such as availability, capacity factor, and maintenance cost per megawatt.
- Support the integration of predictive maintenance tools, including vibration analysis, thermography, and oil analysis.
- Represent Vestas in stakeholder meetings with local authorities, grid operators, and community representatives to align maintenance activities with regulatory requirements.
Required Skills
- Extensive knowledge of wind turbine mechanical systems, including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and blade pitch mechanisms.
- Proficiency with SCADA platforms, data analytics tools, and condition‑monitoring software.
- Strong leadership and team‑management capabilities, with a track record of mentoring technical staff.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to conduct thorough root‑cause analyses.
- Effective communication skills in English; proficiency in Amharic is highly advantageous.
- Project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Commitment to safety culture, with certifications such as OSHA 30‑hour or equivalent preferred.
- Ability to work in remote, high‑altitude environments and adapt to variable weather conditions.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Advanced certifications in wind turbine technology, such as Vestas Certified Service Engineer, are considered a strong asset.

Minimum of eight years of hands‑on experience in wind turbine maintenance, heavy‑industry mechanical engineering, or related sectors. Prior experience leading multidisciplinary maintenance teams and managing large‑scale renewable energy assets is essential.
