Job Overview

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will lead geotechnical investigations, design, and analysis for Bechtel’s upcoming infrastructure projects in the northern region of Ethiopia. This role involves overseeing field investigations, laboratory testing, and the development of design solutions that ensure the safety, stability, and cost‑effectiveness of foundations, slopes, and underground structures. The engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and local authorities to deliver projects that meet international standards and local regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform stability analyses for slopes, retaining structures, and underground excavations using industry‑standard software.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, and environmental engineers to integrate geotechnical considerations into overall project designs.
  • Supervise and mentor junior geotechnical staff and local subcontractors, ensuring quality control and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables related to geotechnical scopes.
  • Engage with Ethiopian regulatory bodies to secure necessary permits and ensure compliance with local codes.
  • Implement risk mitigation strategies and propose innovative, cost‑effective solutions for challenging ground conditions.

Required Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio, Rocscience, or similar).
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex soil and rock data.
  • Excellent project management and stakeholder communication abilities.
  • Proven experience in designing foundations, retaining walls, and underground structures.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Amharic or local languages is advantageous.
  • Ability to work in remote field conditions and adapt to varying climatic environments.

Education

A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited university is required. Professional engineering licensure (e.g., PE, PEng) is preferred but not mandatory.

Experience

Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering, with at least five (5) years in a senior or lead role on large infrastructure projects. Experience working in East Africa or similar emerging markets is highly valued.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from 250,000 to 350,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives and expatriate allowances may be offered.
