Job Overview
The Senior Environmental Health & Safety Manager will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS programs for Bechtel’s construction portfolio in Ethiopia. Reporting directly to the Regional EHS Director, the incumbent will ensure compliance with Ethiopian regulations, international standards, and client requirements. This role involves strategic planning, risk assessment, incident investigation, and stakeholder engagement across multiple project sites. The successful candidate will act as a champion for safety culture, driving proactive measures that reduce incidents and enhance environmental stewardship. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and enforce comprehensive EHS policies, procedures, and standards aligned with Ethiopian law and ISO 45001/14001.
- Conduct site risk assessments, hazard analyses, and safety audits for all construction activities.
- Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Provide EHS training and mentorship to project managers, supervisors, and field workers.
- Collaborate with local authorities, community leaders, and NGOs to ensure transparent communication and compliance.
- Monitor environmental impacts, manage waste streams, and promote sustainable construction practices.
- Prepare and present EHS performance reports to senior leadership and clients.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using data‑driven metrics and benchmarking.
Required Skills
- Deep knowledge of Ethiopian occupational health and safety legislation and environmental regulations.
- Proven experience managing EHS programs on large‑scale construction projects.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to lead multicultural teams and foster a safety‑first culture.
- Proficiency with EHS management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health, Safety Management, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CEM (Certified Environmental Manager) are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in EHS roles within the construction or infrastructure sector, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity overseeing multiple project sites.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 350,000 to SSP 500,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and retirement benefits.
