Job Overview
The Hydropower Plant Mechanical Engineer will play a pivotal role in the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems for a new 150 MW hydroelectric power plant located near Dilla. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on a flagship renewable energy project that will supply clean electricity to thousands of households and industrial customers across the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, electrical, and environmental engineers, to ensure that all mechanical components meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, and safety. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of turbines, generators, penstocks, and auxiliary equipment ensuring compliance with international standards and local regulations.
- Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and procurement packages for all mechanical components.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors during the procurement, fabrication, and installation phases.
- Conduct site inspections, oversee installation activities, and verify that mechanical installations adhere to design intent and safety protocols.
- Perform mechanical system testing, commissioning, and performance validation to achieve optimal plant efficiency.
- Provide technical support for operation and maintenance teams, including troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis of mechanical failures.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation, including design reports, as‑built records, and operation manuals.
- Ensure all activities comply with GE’s safety management system and Ethiopian environmental regulations.
- Collaborate with the project management team to monitor schedule, budget, and risk mitigation strategies.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of hydro turbine mechanics, hydraulic systems, and rotating equipment.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and engineering analysis tools.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a data‑driven approach to performance optimization.
- Effective communication skills for interfacing with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work in remote field locations and adapt to challenging environmental conditions.

Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced degrees (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in renewable energy or fluid mechanics are highly desirable and will be considered an asset.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in mechanical engineering for hydroelectric or large‑scale renewable energy projects. Prior experience with GE equipment or similar international manufacturers is advantageous.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from 120,000 to 180,000 SSP per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, pension contributions, and relocation assistance where applicable.
