Role Purpose
The Agro-Climate Advisory and Agriculture Development Officer plays a critical role in strengthening climate-informed agricultural decision-making among smallholder farmers in Wag-Hemra. This position bridges meteorological data with practical agricultural extension, ensuring farmers receive timely, actionable, and location-specific agro-meteorological advisories.
The Officer will lead the promotion of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), support technology adoption through demonstration plots, and build the capacity of extension systems and local service providers. The role also enhances integration between climate services, research institutions, and development partners, directly contributing to improved productivity, resilience, and sustainability under the ARCS Project.
Key Responsibilities
1. Climate Services & Agro-Meteorological Advisory
- Coordinate with meteorological institutions and agriculture offices to access and interpret seasonal, monthly, and short-term weather forecasts
- Translate weather data into practical agro-advisories including planting schedules, crop selection, irrigation planning, and pest/disease alerts
- Lead timely dissemination of advisories through SMS, extension networks, community groups, and local media
- Ensure high-quality delivery of climate advisory services and farmer training
- Promote inclusive access to climate information for women, youth, and persons with disabilities
2. Agriculture Extension & Field Support
- Establish and manage demonstration plots showcasing climate-smart agriculture technologies
- Train farmers, cooperatives, agro-dealers, and facilitators on improved agronomic and climate-resilient practices
- Provide continuous technical support to extension workers and field advisors
- Facilitate adoption of agricultural innovations through practical demonstrations and localized adaptation
3. Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination
- Collaborate with government institutions, meteorological agencies, NGOs, and private-sector actors
- Strengthen coordination platforms for climate-service planning and knowledge exchange
- Maintain strong alignment with national and regional agricultural and climate strategies
4. Value Chain Development & Market Linkages
- Support farmers’ access to quality inputs, improved seed systems, and climate-informed services
- Facilitate market linkages between producers, buyers, and service providers
- Contribute to strengthening agricultural value chains and improving market access
5. Monitoring, Learning & Evidence Generation
- Collect and analyze field data on advisory usage and adoption of climate-smart practices
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) processes
- Prepare technical reports, progress updates, and documentation of best practices
- Support knowledge-sharing initiatives and resilience learning platforms
6. Capacity Building
- Train and mentor extension staff, community facilitators, and local advisors on agro-meteorology and CSA practices
- Strengthen local systems to ensure sustainability of climate advisory services beyond the project lifecycle
